Q. What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM)?
A. Here are some quick answers found on the web site SEO Glossary.
SEO is the “strategies and tactics undertaken to influence the rankings of web pages in the search engines” (i.e. Google, Yahoo! and Bing). http://www.seoglossary.com/cat/S
SEM is the “strategies and tactics undertaken to increase the amount and quality of leads generated by the search engines”. http://www.seoglossary.com/cat/S
Q. What are SERPs?
A. SERPs is an acronym for Search Engine Results Pages, which is “a page of search results delivered by a search engine”.http://www.seoglossary.com/cat/S
Q. What does it mean to have your site indexed by the search engines?
A. Search engines have robots, which are sometimes called “bots” or “spiders”. Using algorithms not shared with the public, these “spiders” crawl around the internet and index web pages. Once one of these “spiders” visits your site, the pages are available to be included in that search engine’s results pages or SERPs.
Q. Why should I stay away from Flash when building my site?
A. Flash is coming a long way and there are ways to make a Flash site more search engine friendly. Search engines are getting better each day. The bottom line is, if the search engines cannot read static information then they cannot index. There can be Flash elements but if you use, let’s say, Flash navigation and do not have the links at the bottom of the page in (X)HTML, then the spiders will not be able to follow the dynamic Flash navigation.
Q. Can you guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, Yahoo! or Bing?
A. No. This is something that no search engine optimization provider can or should promise. The search engine companies do not share the algorithms they use to conduct searches, which means SEO professionals can only use educated guesses to move a person up in ranking.
Q. What is the difference between organic search results and pay-per-click (PPC) results as it pertains to SEO/SEM?
A. Visually, organic search results make up most of the SERPs where the pay-per-click results are usually along the side and, on some search engines, the sponsored results at the top of the first page.
Organic search results come for the indexes the “spiders” create for the search engine sites.
PPC are similar to a paid advertisement. Companies pay the search engines each time a user clicks on their link in the sponsored link sections of a SERPs page.
